The blog / Brand
Your brand story comes before your logo
Almost every founder I work with arrives with the same request: “I need a logo.” It makes sense. A logo feels real. You can put it on a website, a business card, a van. But a logo on its own is just a shape. What makes people remember you, trust you and choose you is the story underneath it.
A logo can't do the heavy lifting
When the story isn't clear, everything downstream gets harder. The designer guesses at the feeling. The copywriter guesses at the message. The website ends up saying a lot without saying anything. You end up with something that looks fine and doesn't move anyone.
When the story is clear, the design almost chooses itself. Colours, fonts, words and even product decisions all have something to answer to.
Three questions to answer first
- Who is this really for? Not “everyone”. One person you can picture clearly.
- What changes for them? The before and after, in their words, not yours.
- Why you? What you know, believe or do differently that nobody else can copy.
Write the answers in plain language. If you can say them out loud without cringing, you're close.
Then build the look around it
Once the story is set, the logo, colours and website stop being guesswork. They become the visible version of something you already believe. That's when a brand starts to feel like you, and that's when people start repeating it.
